Energy efficient glass refers to glass panels that have a tint, special coating and/or are configured as part of a multi pane unit with an air, gas or vacuum space between the panes.
The purpose of these products is to prevent heat gain (heat entering a building through the glass), heat loss (heat escaping from a building through the glass) or a combination of both.

Tints use a colour in the glass to block radiant heat from the sun. Generally speaking, the darker the tint, the more direct heat from the sun will be blocked. Coatings, such as LowE (low emissivity) use a thin, transparent coating of metals, sprayed onto the glass when manufactured. This prevents non-sun heat transfer through glass. This works for both heat gain and heat loss. Insulated Glass Units (IGU’s) use multiple panes of glass in a sealed unit with a space between the panes creating an insulating barrier. The space can be filled with special gas or even made as a vacuum to improve the insulating qualities of the unit. Tints, coatings, and IGU’s can all be used in conjunction to meet the specific insulating requirements of a given situation.

Yes, however, the type of energy efficient glass you can use will be subject to your frame limitations. Some limitations include size of glazing rebate, strength of frame, and hardware to carry heavier glass.

Yes, simulations can be carried out to estimate the effect of upgrading your windows and/or glass. It’s important to consider the whole window performance (frames and glass) when undertaking a simulation.
