EXPRESS GLASS ISLAND CHALLENGE, COOGEE 2007

Once again, the Express Glass Island Challenge at Coogee, Sunday 25 November, went off with a major splash and this year's event saw the biggest turnout in the ocean swim's seven year history.
Amongst the 1000 or so goggle-clad, broad shouldered competitors and family cheer squads was Mr Peter Garrett, local ALP Member for Kingsford Smith, who no doubt was in high spirits following his party's appointment to Government the night before.

However, politics was far from the minds of the swimmers who, along with the legendary ocean swimmer Shelley Taylor-Smith and the equally legendary Iron Man Champion, Dean Mercer, lined up to take on the demanding 2.5 km swim around Wedding Cake Island. Local girl, Candice Falzon also added her presence to what's been described as the strongest field ever assembled for the event.

Weather conditions were ideal, with the water temperature a comfortable 20 degrees, a beautiful sunny sky and the swell at one metre. A fantastic day was enjoyed by all and the huge turnout of competitors, supporters and celebrities alike ensures that the Express Glass Island Challenge continues to grow as one of Australia's premier events on the ocean swim calendar.
